Pumpkins: From patch to pie

PANAMA CITY — Pumpkins have been disappearing from grocery store bins, most only to meet their fate as jack-o-lanterns, but pumpkins also are good for cooking.

We all have our traditional pumpkin pie recipe, but I stopped by Somethin’s Cookin’ on Tuesday in search of a few new recipes from owner Hannelore Holland. The bistro’s pumpkin pie recipe, which was shared from Penny Vause, has a twist — of orange juice. It’s so good that one of Hannelore’s regulars stops in for a pie year-round.

The recipe can be made with fresh pumpkin or a can of pumpkin — Hannelore likes to use Libby’s. If you use fresh, a hollowed-out pumpkin can double as a serving dish for Layered Monterey Pumpkin Dip.

“It took me a while to like pumpkin pie,” said Anna, originally from Berlin, who was sitting at the counter. “Then I ate some, and someone made it real nice, and I thought, ‘that’s real good.’ ”

Hannelore, also a native of Germany, quickly took to Thanksgiving traditions.

“We didn’t even have pie in Germany,” Hannelore said. “I embrace every holiday.”

Her Pumpkin Pecan Pie has become a best seller during the holiday season.
