GRAYTON BEACH — Sophisticated Scraps is not your average antique store.
The eclectic shop offers its patrons antique linens, century-old post cards and niche pieces dating back 60 years, and it was all a part of the owner's collection.
“There’s no other place where you can get everything that we offer,” said Mathew Lasing, operations manager of the shop. “This is a place to get unique gift items and collectibles.”
Lasing said he and his mother have made a hobby of antiquing. Last year, when he found more time on his hands, he decided to sort through some of the dozens of bins they had filled over the years.
That’s when the pair decided to open a shop selling their collections. Now, they offer their customers antique buttons, quilts, toys and dozens of other items along with a select few items from retailers.
The shop is filled with items in every corner, from the bed covered in antique linens and blankets to the center island with drawers of Lasing's unique finds.
Jennifer Pollard, an employee at the shop, said she works on creating crafts to give customers ideas on how they can use the materials sold at Sophisticated Scraps.
“We really encourage our customers to dig through all the drawers; we’ve got things in every nook and cranny,” Pollard said. “Our shop brings vintage items back to life.”
For the Christmas season, Lasing turned the small shop into a winter wonderland featuring Christmas-themed collections. Once the holiday season ends, though, he said he plans to close for a month to renovate his shop and open a framing shop at the same location.
“We really have a lot of different things going on,” Lasing said. “There’s really so much raw material here that it makes it possible to cater to anyone’s crafts or needs. I like to think we’re full of treasures.”
