Hockett's 'Copper Magic' opens at VAC
PANAMA CITY
Roland Hockett’s "Copper Magic" exhibit is opening Nov. 6 at the Visual Arts Center of Northwest Florida.
His paintings mix copper, acrylic and carving, while his sculptures introduce flat shapes of bright colors morphing into representational form. The gala opening is from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 6 in the VAC’s main gallery. This event is free to VAC members and available to the public for a donation of $5 each. The ‘Copper Magic’ exhibit unveils an entirely new collection of Hockett’s works in copper and aluminum.
Roland Hockett trained at Indiana University from 1956 to 1963, receiving his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, as well as work toward an Master of Fine Arts at the University. He studied with renowned artist and head of printmaking, Rudy Pozzatti.
Hockett returned home to LaPorte, Ind., where he became head of the high school art program for three years.He then joined the staff of Florida State University’s Department of Art Education and Constructive Design and later was invited to become an associate professor of art at Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City. During his time teaching, he continued to create artworks including drawing, painting and printmaking, and sculptures in bronze and copper. Gaining influence from Picasso, Hockett further explored these mediums. In 2003, Hockett retired from teaching, but his passion for creating art continued. Hockett continues to view the art-making process as a learning process.
Pieces of Hockett’s collection can be viewed both locally and internationally, in the Florida Supreme Court, Tallahassee Community College, Gulf Coast Community College, as well as in San Jose, Costa Rica, and many more prominent locations.
In 2004, he built a Sept. 11 memorial which was installed and dedicated in San Jose, Costa Rica.
